In the 1970s, Gary Grant got a job at a local bike shop in his hometown of Amersham. He started selling skateboard accessories while he was still working at the bike shop because he noticed a new craze for customized skateboards. This helped him develop his natural ability to buy and sell. Gary was let go and given the freedom to start his own business because the owner of the bike shop was appropriately unimpressed that the majority of calls to the shop were for Gary.

Gary and Catherine bought a house in Amersham that they used as a warehouse for their skateboarding business after they wed in 1979. When Gary thinks back to that time in his life, he remembers how their house's stock was making the ceilings squeak and how some of the upstairs doors wouldn't close properly.

When Gary and Catherine took over the Pram and Toy Bar in May 1981, they started The Entertainer. At the time the first store opened, Catherine was also a full-time nurse. Gary and Catherine saw an opportunity to transform the shop into a place where adults and children could enjoy themselves, find something to "entertain" them, and want to return time and time again because the previous owner didn't particularly like children.

Gary hired his first employees as the possibility of expansion became real. One of them still works for us today as the leader of our New Store Development Team. In June 1985, a second location opened in Beaconsfield. As the saying goes, the rest is history.

We consider ourselves to be one-of-a-kind retailers, similar to a signature that cannot be duplicated. We want every child's childhood to be filled with wonder.
